Washington Monument to Reopen on May 12

The Washington Monument is set to reopen on May 12th. It has been closed since the 2011 earthquake.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake damaged the monument. The photograph above shows contractors from WJE conducting exterior assessment of the monument in September, 2011.

Some of the damage included cracks in marble panels and spalling of the corners of the pyramidion panels. Vertical cracks were also found in the tie beams in the "F" course of the pyramidion. A detailed report on the damage was published on nps.gov. Take a look:
