Sydney to Test Giant Underground Trash Bins

Posted on August 24, 2013

Sydney, Australia is going to test temporarily storing trash in giant underground bins. The City of Sydney has announced that the underground rubbish and recycling chutes will first be tested on Darlinghurst street. Residents will drop trash into chutes that send the trash into the trash bins below. The bins will rise up from the ground by hydraulic lifts when it is time for the trash to be collected by sanitation trucks.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a statement, "The underground system will be the first of its kind in Australia, but similar systems are already used in the cities around the world where high density housing leaves limited space for bins. This is an innovative and practical way to manage traffic on these small streets, reduce clutter and beautify these streets for local residents."
