Solar Powered Houseboats From RAFAA, Arkup and Azura Marina

Posted on April 22, 2010

RAFAA Architecture & Designs, a Swiss design firm, came up with a unique solar powered houseboat design called the Last Resort. The houseboat design won first prize in a recent Germany-based design competition from Internationale Bauausstellung.

The 5 meter by 15 meter solar-powered houseboat contains a living room, bathroom, kitchen and two bedrooms. A sliding panel helps separate the two rooms. Images and floor plans for the houseboat can be found on designboom.

Inhabitat reported that RAFAA planned to begin construction on these solar houseboats several years ago but the plans did not come to fruition.

There have since been actual luxury solar powered houseboats embarking on journeys in lakes and oceans.

One unique solar houseboat that is already in use is called the Arkup. Miami Herald calls it a "green-energy luxury floating home." Take a look:

A smaller vessel is the Aquanima 40 "Solar Eclipse" which was built by Azura Marine. The ship - which features a 10 kW solar roof - is seen leaving Bali in this video.
