Scientists Name 19 Species of Ferns After Lady Gaga

Posted on October 24, 2012

Scientists from Duke University have named a new genus of ferns after singer Lady Gaga. The new genus includes 19 species of ferns, which will all carry the name Gaga. The scientists say Lady Gaga's heart-shaped Armani Prive' costume from her 2010 Grammys performance resembles the bisexual reproductive stage of the ferns, called a gametophyte. One of the species of ferns extends its new leaves in a clenched little ball, resembling Gaga's claw-like salute to her fans. The scientists also say that members of the new genus also bear a distinct DNA sequence spelling GAGA. Take a look:

A research paper about the ferns, Gaga, a New Fern Genus Segregated from Cheilanthes (Pteridaceae), was publishe din Systematic Botany.
