Sandbonis Being Used to Clean Oil Covered Beaches

Posted on July 7, 2010

The AP reports that Gulf Coast crews are using sand-sifting machines called Sandbonis to help clean beaches that are covered in oil because of the BP oil disaster. The name is related to the Zamboni machines that help smooth out ice rinks.

The Sanbonis sift the sand and wash it with hot water and a mild detergant. There are complaints that the beaches are not being thoroughly cleaned and that the oil is hidden a few inches beneath the sand. Perhaps, these Sanbonis can do a better job of cleaning the beaches. Take a look:

The AP says engineers say the sandbonis can clean fifty tons of sand an hour.
