Researchers Develop Swarm of Ping Pong Ball Sized Robots
Posted on December 17, 2012
Researchers at University of Colorado Boulder have created a swarm of ping pong ball sized robots. The researchers, led by University of Colorado Boulder Assistant Professor Nikolaus Correll, created a swarm of twenty of the robots, they call "droplets." They are also developing software to enable the robots to work together. They plan to use this software as a platform for more complex swarm robotics. Correll says swarms of robots could one day be unleashed to contain an oil spill or to self-assemble into hardware in space.
Correll said in a release, "Every living organism is made from a swarm of collaborating cells. Perhaps some day, our swarms will colonize space where they will assemble habitats and lush gardens for future space explorers."
