Rare Roman Helmet and Face-Mask Found in Cumbria

Posted on September 14, 2010

A treasure hunter discovered a rare Roman bronze helmet complete with face-mask in Cumbria using a metal detector. The helmet and face-mask is one of only three comparable examples ever to have been discovered in the United Kingdom complete with face-mask in the last 250 years.

Christie's press release says the helmets were worn for cavalry sports events. They were not used in combat. The helmet may have had colorful streamers attached to it. Participants in the events also carried elaborately painted shields.

The helmet will be auctioned on Christie's in October. It is expected to sell for $307,800 - $461,700. You can zoom in for a close look at the helmet here.
