Rabbit Born Without Ears Spotted Near Damaged Fukushima Reactor Site

Posted on June 10, 2011

A rabbit was born without ears was spotted near the damaged Fukushima nuclear site in Japan. The little white earless bunny has been given names like "mutant rabbit" and "nuclear rabbit" by the media.

While it is clear the radiation level near the damaged Fukushima reactors is dangerous, it is not clear the "mutant rabbit" is connected to the radioactive incident. F. Ward Whicker, professor emeritus at Colorado State University's Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, told AOL Weird News, in an email interview, "Yes, radiation can cause mutations that can be occasionally expressed as obvious birth defects, such as shown in the video. However, to say this is the result of contamination from the Fukushima accident is a stretch, because natural radiation, as well as many other chemical substances in the environment and other factors, can also be mutagenic."
