NOAA: No Evidence of Aquatic Humanoids Has Ever Been Found

Posted on July 4, 2012

NOAA has issued a statement saying there is no evidence of mermaids. Mermaids, or aquatic humanoids, are fanciful creatures that have been described in tales of many different ancient cultures.

Included in the statement from NOAA is "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found." NOAA's statement appears to have been a response to an Animal Planet show called Mermaids: The Body Found, which aired in May.

NOAA says in its mermaid entry, "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples? That's a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists."

Here's a scary trailer from Animal Planet about its mermaids show.
