NASA's TRMM Satellite Captures Image of Hurricane Irene

Posted on August 25, 2011

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite passed over Hurricane Irene at 15:42 UTC (11:42 a.m. EDT) on the 24th as she was passing directly over Crooked Island in the southeast Bahamas.

Hurricane's Irene eye is visible despite being partially blocked by the island. The rainbands surrounding Irene's center are much more tightly wound and are more evenly distributed around the center then they were the previous day. Hurricane Irene was a category three when this image was taken.
