NASA's Earth Observatory Shares Image of Nearly Frozen Over Lake Erie

This image acquired on January 9, 2014 shows a Lake Erie that is nearly completely frozen over. The images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite.

NASA says the lake was 90% ice covered on January 9th. The frozen lake curbed lake effect snows that often pummel towns like Buffalo with lake effect snow.

By January 16th, NASA says Lake Erie was only 62% ice covered as temperatures thawed once the polar vortex moved out of the region.
