Heidi the Cross-Eyed Opossum is Dead

Posted on September 28, 2011

Heidi, a famous cross-eyed opossum, was put to sleep today at the Leipzig Zoo due to health complications resulting from old age. Heidi's cross-eyed looks made her popular on the Internet. Heidi's webpage on the Leipzig's Zoo's website says Heidi and her sister, Naira, were probably born in 2008. Therefore, Heidi lived to be about three and a half years old, which is pretty close to the maximum life expectancy for opossums of four to five years.

The Leipzig Zoo issued the following statement about Heidi:

"Heidi, our cross-eyed opossum, has closed her eyes forever today. She passed away having shown typical symptoms of her old age and having severely suffered from arthrosis. This illness has made it painful for her to move over the last couple of weeks and Heidi was treated with vitamins and other medicine. Following a short-lived improvement of her condition, her general state of health deteriorated over the last days despite continuous efforts by the veterinarians."
