Deep Sea Treasure Hunters Find Mysterious Large Objects in Baltic Sea

Posted on January 30, 2012

Deep sea treasure hunters have found two mysterious objects on the floor of the Baltic sea. The objects are 300 feet below the surface. The team used side-scan sonar which revealed a 60-meter diameter cylinder-shaped object, with a rigid tail which is 400 meters long. Side scan sonar uses a sonar "towfish" which is pulled behind a boat. The sound echoes are used to map the sea floor and to take sideways images of objects on the sea floor.

In addition to the large object with a tail, the towfish also showed a second disc-shaped object which is 200 meters away. There appears to be a path of destruction leading to the second object which almost looks like the path of a crash. In fact, the object looks a great deal like Han Solo's Millenium Falcon. That has led to some excited speculation that it is a UFO. The more mundane explanation is that the scanning technology is showing distorted images, and that the images are actually a ship wreck. Peter Lindberg, from Ocean Explorer, says they must wait until spring and better weather before they can launch another expedition to find out what exactly is on the ocean floor. CNN reports:
