Deep-sea Shrimp Spews Bioluminescent Vomit to Escape Predators

Posted on October 16, 2012

Parapandalus is a deep-sea shrimp that is capable of spewing a bioluminescent fluid to escape predators. The shrimp is pictured spewing up the substance in lab photograph from 2009. The shrimp is a type of caridean shrimp. It was obtained during the Bioluminescence 2009 mission.

National Geographic reports that scientists on the Johnson-Sea-Link recently encountered the shrimp again during an expedition in the Bahamas.
