5,000 Blackbirds Fall Dead from the Sky in Beebe, Arkansas

Posted on January 2, 2011

Thousands of birds fell from the sky in Beebe, Arkansas just before midnight on New Year's Eve. Arkansas game officials are testing the birds to try and determine what happened.

CNN reports that it is estimated that about 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky. The vast majority of the birds are dead. An ornithologist told CNN it could have been a lightning strike or hail that killed the birds. There has also been a mysterious mass fish death in Arkansas.

Keith Stephens with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission says the bird deaths could be linked to New Year's fireworks.
