Japanese Scientists Build Baseball Playing Robot

Posted on April 29, 2013

Japanese scientists have built a robot that plays baseball using a large bat that looks like the cover of a fan. Wired reports that the robot has a 100,000 neuron brain and runs on software from Nvidia. Wired says the artificial brain in the robot "mimics the function of about 100,000 neurons."

The back of the batting cage behind the robot contains an accelerometer that records data about the incoming baseball and transmits it to the robot. Using this data and its 100,000 neuron brain the robot is able to make adjustments to its swing as it receives new pitches. The research was published here in the journal Neural Networks.
