Animated Wind Map Shows Current Wind Speeds in United States

Posted on March 30, 2012

A visually pleasing animated wind map has been created that shows the current wind speeds using wind data that is updated every hour. Stronger winds are represented by lighter colors. This is just a screen grab of the map above. You can see the animated version of the map at hint.fm/wind/. You can zoom in to get more local data by clicking on the map. The site says its animated map is best viewed with the Chrome browser.

Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg - who lead Google's Big Picture visualization research group - created the impressive wind map. The map relies on data from the National Digital Forecast Database. The site says the near-term forecasts are updated once per hour.
