Animal Planet Short Tells How Man Was Diagnosed With Pea Growing Inside His Lung

Posted on December 9, 2012

Animal Planet has a series, Monsters Inside Me, that documents strange bad things to happen to people, often from parasites, bacteria and other invaders. This episode, "Attack of the Killer Pea," tells about a man, Ron Sveden, who had a mass in his lung that caused his lung to collapse. The mass turned out to be a pea, which had sprouted, and then became surrounded by granulation tissue. The pea was removed and the man's health improved. This is a real even that took place in 2010.

Walter Reeves, a horticulturist, told CNN that is possible for a seed to sprout inside the human body because the seeds don't need light for the first two or three days. He says, "Isn't that what happens when a seed is underground and gets moisture and warmth? They [seeds] don't need light."
