Altaeros Energies Demonstrates Airborne Wind Turbine

Altaeros Energies, a wind energy company, demonstrated its 35-foot-wide Airborne Wind Turbine (AWT) in Limestone, Maine this week. The turbine prototype is designed to reach 1,000 feet. It was tested at 350 feet. The AWT uses a helium-filled, inflatable shell to ascend to higher altitudes where winds are more consistent and stronger than on the ground. Tethers are used to hold the AWT steady and to send electricity down to the ground. Take a look:
