Acorn Woodpeckers Have Clown-like Appearance, Store Acorns in Trees

Acorn Woodpeckers live in extended family groups. They family selects a single tree to store acorns, which is called a granary tree. The woodpeckers drill more holes in the tree each year to store acorns. All About Birds says a single granary tree may have as many as 50,000 holes, with each hole filled with an acorn in the Fall. Sometimes telephone poles or fence poles may be used instead of a tree for acorn storage.

The colorful bird is a favorite among birdwatchers because of its clown-like appearance. Wildlife Photographer Marie Read talks about her experience photographing Acorn Woodpeckers in this video. Take a look:
