A High Ridge in Antarctica is the Coldest Place on Earth

Posted on December 15, 2013

Researchers using NASA satellites have determined that the coldest place on Earth is located on a high ridge in Antarctica. Temperatures can dip below minus 133.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 92 Celsius) in the high ridge on the East Antarctic Plateau.

Scientists have found the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth in this area from Dome Arugs to Dome Fuji using data from the MODIS sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite, and the TIRS sensor on Landsat 8. The scientists say the temperature dropped to minus 136 F (minus 93.2 C) on August 10, 2010. This breaks the previous record low of minus 128.6 F (minus 89.2 C), set in 1983 at the Russian Vostok Research Station in East Antarctica.
